For a change of pace, we headed out on Lake Ontario to do a little brown fishing with Greg Saffares. After a late start, the brown fishing remained good throughout the whole trip. We managed to boat 7 browns and lost another 3. The lake conditions started off calm but as the morning went on it got a little bumpy. Found the fish in 15 to 25 feet of water down 7 - 15 feet off the riggers. Thunder-sticks, purple, and black & silver stingers worked the best. Johnny will be out on the river tomorrow for some drop-back steelhead fishing with Ken Cestone. I'll have a report tomorrow evening on how they did. Until then... Until 9:00 PM tomorrow, Wed, 500 CFS From 9:00 PM tomorrow until 9:00 PM Thu, 335 CFS

Johnny was out with Bill Buckley and his 10 year-old son Ethan from CT for a half of day of drop-back steelhead fishing. They started the day early this morning only to find a good amount of fishermen in every hole they went to. Once the fishing pressure started lightning up closer to the end of the trip, they were able to fight a few drop-backs. They ended the day 2 for 5 with a big female getting away right at the net. The most memorable part of today was Ethan hooking and landing his very first steelhead. I also made Ethan the photo of the week. Way to go Ethan! All the fish were caught on bobbers and egg sacs. Pink was the only productive color today. Here’s the weather forecast for tonight and the next 2 days : Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 11pm and midnight, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm between midnight and 3am, then showers likely after 3am. Johnny was out with Steve Conklin today and it was a tough day on the river. Steve went 3 for 5 on the centerpin and egg sacs. There was some big water in the lower end of the river today, it was also quite dirty, and it was slowly rising throughout the day from run-off. They ended up calling it a half day after working the fishable areas pretty hard. The Pineville gage is currently 1810 c.f.s. and still slowly coming up. Johnny will not be on the water tomorrow, I'll have another updated report in the next few days. Until then... Until 11:59 PM Sun APR 06, 1,150 CFS

04.04.2008

Johnny was out with Ken Cestone today for a half day trip. The rain, recent water change (going from 750 c.f.s. to 1150 c.f.s.) and run-off made the fishing difficult today. Ken did manage to land 3 steelies and he lost one other. The picture of the fish in the net and one other steelie, that there is no picture of, were pretty small. The Pineville gage is currently at 1700 c.f.s... Here is the detailed forecast for the rest of today and tomorrow : Occasional showers. High near 40. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Tonight: Occasional showers, mainly before 8pm. Low around 35. Chance of precipitation is 90%. 04.03.2008

Johnny was out with Steve Searle from NY today and the day started off slow but got better as the temperatures warmed up. Steve went 9 for 16 on the centerpin in the lower section of the river. 2 of fish were brown trout (one was really small), most of the steelies were drop-backs, and only one fresh female steelie was landed. Blue and white egg sacs worked the best. The Pineville gage is currently 1240 c.f.s. but is currently on the rise as I type this report (going up to 1150 c.f.s.). Johnny will be out with Ken Cestone tomorrow, I'll update this report again tomorrow evening. Until then... Until 9:00 PM today, 750 CFS From 9:00 PM today until 9:00 PM Tue, 1,150 CFS

03.31.2008

Johnny was out with Chuck Hantis and it was a tough day down the DSR. It was a cold, miserable, rainy, windy day. The water came up a little, turned off color, and seemed a little colder as the day went on. All these factors definitely didn’t help the fishing. Chuck did manage to go 4 for 5 on the centerpin but they covered a good amount of water. Tomorrow looks like a nice day with temperatures in the 60's and late day thunderstorms. Johnny will not be on the river the next 2 days. I will have another report Thursday evening. Until then... Until 9:00 PM Fri APR 04, 750 CFS

03.30.2008

After a late start due to cold overnight temperatures and slush in the lower river, Johnny headed out with Chuck Nazarian and his brother Mike for a day of steelheading. They managed to land 6 steelies and lost another 7 on the bobbers and egg sacs. The trophy of the day was lost by Chuck. After a long fight, a steelie which weighed in the upper teens was lost after the hook pulled out close to the net. But his brother Mike did manage to land a beautiful female steelie which I made Photo of the week. Tomorrow looks ugly with ice in the morning and rain showers and wind for the rest of the day with temperatures predicted to be in the low 40's. Johnny will be out again tomorrow with Chuck Hantis from NJ on the centerpin. I will have a report some time tomorrow evening. Until then...

03.29.2008

Johnny was out with Joe and Anton from CT today fishing the lower part of the Salmon River. They ended the day 8 for 18 including a nice female drop-back steelie. Most of the fish were small male steelies. Joe was fishing with the centerpin and Anton was fishing with the spinning rod (bobbers and egg sacs). The day started off with temperatures in the upper teens and only made it into the low 30’s by late afternoon with windy conditions all day. It was a tough day for hooking fish. They had many quick hits and a lot if crushed egg sacs. Tomorrow Johnny will be out with Chuck Nazarian, I'll have a report tomorrow evening. Until then... Until 9:00 PM Mon MAR 31, 750 CFS

03.25.2008

Johnny was out with Ken Cestone today for a half day and it was a little tougher down the DSR than yesterday. Ken was 1 for 3 and the one fish he landed was a dime bright female steelie. Fishing conditions were also a little tougher with the rain, snow melt, and a slow rising river from run-off. By the time the day ended (around 11 a.m.) the water was starting to get dirty. The Pineville gage is currently running 1490 c.f.s... I also added the pictures from yesterday. We will not be on the river tomorrow; we will be out again on Saturday. All of his fish also came on the bobbers and egg sacs. A good amount of fresh big steelies still coming into the lower half of the river. 03.05.2008

Sorry for the delay in the report but Johnny and I had to go over to Oswego when he got home after the trip yesterday and we ended up not getting home till after midnight. The roads were a mess last night due to freezing rain, sleet and snow. Johnny was out with Greg Saffares yesterday and they fished the middle and upper sections of the Salmon River with not a lot of luck. They ended the day 3 for 4 on the bobbers and egg sacs. The Pineville gage is currently at 1220 c.f.s. this morning and it looks like it is still coming up. We received a good amount of ice overnight with a little dusting of snow. Temperatures are slowly rising to above freezing and the roads are slowly improving. Watch out for a lot of low-hanging trees from the accumulation of ice. We are heading out to do a little fishing tomorrow afternoon; I'll have a report on how we did when we get back. Until then...
