Guided River Trips Our guide service centers on fishing the Salmon River and surround Lake Ontario tributaries for Steelhead,Salmon, Brown and Rainbow trout. We have also seen a recent upswing in the Atlantic Salmon population so there's always a chance of hooking the elusive "sportfish of kings".
Our guide service differs from many others because we are dedicated "hands on" guides. When you book a trip with NY Fishtales you will have a guide standing next to you, providing any help you might need and NOT a typical "rock jock" guide who ushers their clients into a known spot, gives a few quick instructions, and then sits on the bank until you are lucky enough to hook up. We pride ourselves on this difference in service and are positive you will understand the difference too. Also, when you call us to reserve a date, you will buy guided by NY Fishtales: Johnny and Andrea, we never contract out bookings, and never will. We will do whatever it takes to make your trip a memorable one.
Chinook & Coho Salmon - End of August through October Brown Trout - Mid October through November Steelhead - Mid October through May About our fishery The river fishery in the salmon river is maintained through stocking and natural reproduction of king, coho and atlantic salmon, steelhead, brown and rainbow trout. These fish live in the salmon river for a few months to a few years (depending on species and river conditions) and then migrate into lake ontario. After a few years in the lake of growth from feeding on alwifes, the fish return to the salmon river where they are the centerpiece of a world class river fishery. Our steelhead average 8 to 10 pounds, with our clients landing
many 15 to 20 pound steelhead each year. Salmon average 20 to 25
pounds, with a few 30 to 40 pound fish caught every year. You have
a good chance of landing a lake run brown trout that is bigger than
15 pounds but the average is 4 to 6 pounds. We fly fish, spin fish,
or centerpin float fish depending on your style and river conditions.
With our combined experience of 25 years, you will learn techniques
of finding, hooking, fighting and landing these world-class fish
on your own. We will do our best to make your trip an experience
you will not forget. -Johnny and Andrea, NY State Licensed Guides #2827 & #3994
